Forklift Truck Operator – Refresher Training


To provide effective basic operator training for those operator’s who will be required to operate industrial counterbalanced or reach lift trucks, rider-operated as part of their normal work duties.

This operator training course is designed to meet the requirements placed upon employers with regard to their duties under the Health and Safety act 1974 and meets the requirement to satisfy the Health & Safety Executives “Approved Code of Practice L117” for Forklift Trucks.

Training Course Objective:

On successful completion of this operator refresher-training course, the course members will be able to:

 Operate the truck model used during the training course, safely and correctly in accordance with the manufacturer’s operating procedures manual and in accepted good operating practices.

 Show their understanding, by clearly stating the causes of instability of trucks and loads.

 Carry out correctly the routine pre-use inspection and take-over maintenance of the truck in accordance with the manufacturer’s operating procedures manual.

Who is it for / requirements?

This operator training course is designed for those operators’ who have earlier been given adequate formal basic operator training and are appropriately certificated to operate industrial counterbalanced or reach lift trucks rider-operated (documentary evidence of eligibility must be provided to support this claim). If this cannot be provided then the operator must undergo an assessment and sign a declaration, stating testing has taken place previous to the refresher training.

Course Programme

Practical Training

Introduction to the truck to be used for training, maneuvering, stacking, de-stacking, previously declared and identified weaknesses in remedial tuition and practice.

Theoretical Training

Operator’s Safety Code, updates in regulations and procedures.


The practical test of basic operating skills and to carry out a lift truck pre-use inspection as recommended by the manufacturer. Associated knowledge theory test.

Syllabus includes:

  • Hazards and risks,
  • The control of fire risk,
  • Principles and practice of fire safety management at work
  • The role of the nominated fire warden.


This qualification is assessed by

  • Associated Knowledge test 30-minute  25 question multiple-choice examination
  • A practical assessment of pre-use Inspection
  • A practical Assessment of Manoeuvering a forklift through course.
